The Rev. Jesse Jackson paid homage to the Swanee Quintet on a recent trip to Augusta.

Grammy-winner Lou Rawls, also in town last month, chuckled when recalling the days when he, as part of the Pilgrim Travelers, toured gospel music's chitlin' circuit, as did the Swanees.

The Swanees are one of a handful of groups still performing traditional gospel music, Howard said. He said it will be challenging to retain its signature sound.

“It’s going to be interesting to see that transition,” he said. “You gotta stick with what you started with.”
